Fishing

Rangeley is known for its trophy sized Landlocked Salmon and its world class Brook Trout fishery.

The larger lakes in the Rangeley region are the Mooselookmeguntic, Rangeley, Azicohos, Cupsuptic, and the Upper and Lower Richardson (home of the famous Upper Dam where Carrie Stevens fished.) The bigger lakes create the headwaters of the Androscoggin River. The bigger rivers of the area, the Magalloway, the Kennebago, and the Rapid, are fly-fishing only, and are best fished on foot. There are also some smaller rivers and streams like the Cupsuptic and the Rangeley River, which are good to fish, and many smaller ponds surrounding the area, a lot of which are fly-fishing only.

Ice-Out on the larger lakes usually happens in early May. Starting in May, through the beginning of July, the red quills, flying ants, caddis, and drakes are hatching.  When the water warms up mid-summer, fish the deeper lakes and pools with downriggers or lead core lines. When the water begins to cool again in September try out a wide variety of flies.
